When did you startup? And what does the name ‘Enzy’ signify?
ENZY Studios has been up and running since July of 2013. I used to DJ in Los Angeles under the name “DJ ENZY”. Since then, ENZY has stuck with me for my ventures including ENZY Studios. ENZY signifies NZ (which are my initials).
If I am not wrong, Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri is a well established player in the Jewellery industry. How did this shift to Music Industry come? Any specific motivation?
TBZ has been a jewellery firm for over 100 yrs and is still thriving in the gem and jewellery business. I may have not joined the family business but I have inherited the values of excellence and quality from my family. Consciously or subconsciously music has been a part of my life. I started my music training at the age of 6 and there’s been no looking back since then. It was the passion and drive which has brought me here pursuing a career in the music industry.
You have been quite a successful singer, composer and music producer yourself. How did your knowledge of music help you set up the studio?
Without adequate knowledge of music production, recording spaces and classical music, I would not have been able to start ENZY. Because of my degree in music production from the Los Angeles School of Music, I was able to pick and choose each item/equipment that is installed in the studio. I played a comprehensive part in the designing as well as technical specifications in all aspects of the space. I have a full hands-on experience of recording as well as production, which helps me better understand the studio nuances and produce music.
Tell us about Enzy Studios. What are your specialties? What are the services you offer? And why would clients choose your studio over the innumerable other music studios in Mumbai?
ENZY Studios is a professional recording and production studio in Goregaon, Mumbai. Spanning on an area of 5600 sq. ft., ENZY is one of the largest facilities in India, designed by a Los Angeles-based designer and engineer named Jerry Steckling. ENZY also offers one of the biggest live rooms and 2 ISO rooms which can collectively hold up to 65 musicians at once. One of the main highlights of ENZY is the highly advanced equipment-and-microphone list, which combines, with a great selection and balance, the analogue and digital gears.
What is your client profile? How have the music and film industries reacted to your entry into the music field? Have they been welcoming?
The industry has been extremely kind and welcoming. We have received nothing but positive reviews and comments from our clients. We have had a large number of people, filmy as well as non-filmy, as our clients. These include bands like Something Relevant, Spud in the Box, The Siddharth Basrur Project, etc. Our clients from the filmy world include Javed Akhtar, Sameer, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Alka Yagnik, Ustad Rashid Khan, Rashid Ali, Asad Khan, etc.
We have also recorded with international artists such as the All Star Gypsies (Gypsy Kings Alumni), Kate Miller from Australia, Space Natives from LA, etc.
What’s the competition you face in this industry? And, what are your views on promoting music talent from humbler backgrounds?
We are not focusing on competition at the moment. We are one of the biggest facilities in India. All our energies and minds are focused on making good music and providing the best possible atmosphere for the musicians that walk in. I have personally been involved in a number of projects which will act as platforms for independent and upcoming artists. These projects will be soon out in public for the people.
What have been the biggest difficulties you faced and how did you overcome them? What are your future plans?
The biggest difficulty we faced, was that of executing the designs of Jerry Steckling, on ground in Mumbai. But, in time, we found a UK-based company named Munro Acoustics led by Kapil Thirwani, who deftly executed the project. Future plans include creating more quality music and providing a platform for young talent.
One tip for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don’t lose your focus. Keep trying. Don’t give up, and keep dreaming because, dreams count.
