The Story of Zomato (How it started and the Founder’s Background)

Zomato does not need an introduction or description since it is one of the most popular Food Delivery and restaurant discovery sites. The app is used the most to ease online orders.

It provides the consumer with a lot of information about restaurants, the delicacies it provides, its delivery options, the menu card, its address, the discounts provided along with customer reviews, etc. Founded by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, Zomato extended its services in July 2008 making the empire vastly grow in twenty-four countries namely – India, The United Kingdom and the United States of America, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Italy, Lebanon, Malaysia, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, Slovakia, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Czech Republic, Indonesia, Ireland.

Zomato serves more than around eighty million customers producing a commendable league in advertising and marketing their site. The key contributors in the growing esteem of Zomato include Deepinder Goyal, who was already mentioned as its founder and CEO, Gaurav Gupta, who is the co-founder and COO, Mohit Gupta as the CEO for the food delivery business, Gunjan Patidar securing the designation of the head of engineering and Akriti Chopra as the CFO.

How it began…….

The history of Zomato dates back to 2008 as a different domain name as Foodiebay later renamed as Zomato in November 2010. The company started expanding and adding several advertising techniques one of which was the printed version of the website named- Citibank Zomato Restaurant Guide in May 2012 collaborating with Citibank. The policy now, however, has been discontinued. Food porn was given a huge appraisal through Zomato once its official domain name was launched. Zomato brought its delivery to the forefront after launching it in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, and Kolkata where the variety of the urban population sparked an increment in its sales. After gaining popularity and success Goyal expanded overseas in 2012-14.

Deepinder Goyal, someone who was known as a poster-boy who started off with his colleague being an IIT based Delhi Alumnus. It started off when there was a huge demand for leaflets and posters creating chaos amongst the need for different restaurants to order food. That’s when it struck the two youngsters to make it a lot less hectic by converting it into a digital website where people could order food without facing a hassle.

Now Zomato is written as one of the best success stories with an annual turnover of more than 383 crores.
